i really dig the logo, more so how its represented on the blog...

scrivs turns pretty much everything he gets involved in into a successful undertaking..

and this i think will be no exception....

I agree, Clint. The logo is fantastic and the overall layout is very appealing. The colors are great and the gradient of the masthead adds a lot to the page.

I think this is one of the best sites I've seen on CSS Beauty. Congratulations!

Great design, although the slight errata on the blog header can be a bit of an eyesore.

Very clear text portrayal, making it easy on the eyes.

Nice site, but one thing about it instantly annoyed me.

It doesn't let you re-size the text in IE. Such a simple fix and something I would've expected from Scrivs...

Hey guys, I'm the designer for 9rules (did the logo and the site), and I'd like to thank all of you for your positive comments. It means a lot that so many people think that our website looks great, and I very much appreciate it.

Chris - the reason that the text isn't resizable in IE is because for certain aspects of the site where background images are pixel-precisely laid into blocks, it's difficult to drop em, ex, or % sizing on fonts there because it's an approximation and not an exact value. Fortunately, the combination of FF and Safari uses on 9rules outweigh the IE6 users, and the number of IE6 users who actively boost the text size up and down is an even lower percentage.

Chris, unfortunately, I cannot allow for any imperfect text rendering (like if I used percentages) for the layout is complicated and I'd rather risk an IE6 user not boosting text then for every user to see a poorly aligned/sized text area. Take a peek at the 9rules CSS file and you'll understand what an undertaking it really would be. I hope you understand.

Thanks again guys!

The site looks nice. But there's no way back from the blog to the home page.

Any comments on this lack of navigation (from my point of view), Mike?

P. S.
The logo is really great!

I agree, it really is a nice looking site. Mike did a great job on it, and there is still more to come.

Great site, but I would like to see a visible link to the home page. I know if I click the "Proud member 9rules network" button it takes me to the home page, but I want a link that is visible at the top of the page, like on the home page.

Other than that it is perfect...in my opinion.

I think this site is horribly designed. No font resizing? Shameful. There's page load problems in Mac FF. My only navigation is Home and Blog? The navigation disappears when I go in the Blog? Totally confusing and unusable.

Over at Paul's weblog (9rules.com/whitespace) you can read my comments about the navigation issues. We aren't finished with the site by any means, and will be moving the weblog over to the new design very soon, so that explains why the design is much different. The site is still in active development, and things should be looking/feeling better in the upcoming weeks.

Jermaine - I'm not really sure how font resizing has anything to do with a site's visual design, but after careful evaluation of the font-resizing issue in IE6, our team decided that the work it would take to make the site resize in IE6 wasn't worth it in the long run.

My testing didn't find any visual problems with Firefox on either platform, so I'm not sure I know what you're talking about. Let me know though, and we'll make sure to fix it.

I think you did a fantastic job on this one, Mike Rundle -- very professional, very fun, very user friendly. Great job!

As a 9rules Network member, it does me proud to see such an excellent design put forward, making it easy and enjoyable to find all the sites within the network and see the latest headlines. The best part is the site and network is constantly improving, so it can only get better. Mike and Scrivs are doing excellent.

The page does the job it is supposed to do wonderfully. It also adds some class as well as some visual excitement to this network.

Text resizing isn't one of my problems, so ... thumbs up!

i visited this site some weeks ago and it has changed much for the better since then. the addition of the 9rules favourite adds a dynamic feel to the front page and breaks it up nicely. some tidy details, the logo is great, the thick borders (in the right places) on some of the sections, the gradients, the rss logos, and the 'site icons' (these icons though, in the left list, no doubt were meant to have another purpose than a link to the home page). the top intro looks great on the front page, the charcoal bg leads well into both 'columns' of content beneath, and the weblog link that's dying to be clicked to bring this tab to the front.

click this tab though, and the style changes a lot. although generally the blog associates itself well with the intro page by the logos, fonts and (especially) colours, some font differences stand out like a sore thumb. the right-hand headers and links do not sit comfortably in that font and the prev/next links at the base of the page have been overlooked.

overall a great site, fantastic logo, cracking colour scheme, and one i've bookmarked already and will visit regularly.

The 9rules seemed impossible to find on the site, are they still the same?

Neal - Thanks for all the kind words, very much appreciated!

As for the "9 Rules" itself, we've taken things in a slightly different direction. The logo — if you look carefully — has 9 petals, symbolizing the 9 in 9rules. We chose a leaf-like metaphor for the logo to express that the 9rules network is a living, growing, breathing creation that is made stronger by the more members (or leaves) it has. Okay, maybe the metaphor's a bit stretched, but you get the idea ;)

ah, i just read the feedback over at 9rules.com/whitespace, a lot of work on your plate that can only make a great site better. sorry i hadn't read all before i posted. interesting changes ahead, will look forward to seeing them.

i now wish there was an edit button. very nice metaphor mike, and not stretched too far!

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply Re: text sizing.

To be honest I agree it's not a big issue, but it was the only problem I could find :o). However, I do find it confusing that we are able to resize the text in Firefox without screwing up the design - do IE and Firefox boost text-size differently?

Also, regarding the 9Rules logo - I did actually notice the 9 leaves before you explained the reason behind it and actually came to the same conclusions that you just clarified! (leaves being part of a living thing, growing, etc). So no - I don't think you're stretching the metaphor too far. (or maybe I'm just crazy too and read WAY too much into things :o) )

The site has a horizontal scrollbar when resized to 800x600. It's only a few pixels... surely this can be fixed?

Also, the font used for the tabs at the top looks a little thin (winXP, FF), there's gotta be nicer fonts you could use there.
