Design-wise, I love the grid, typography, logo, and color. However, I think the site could use a short explanation of what exactly this site is somewhere on the home page, if not every page. Having not heard of Salient before, it took me a while to guess that this was a student newspaper, and then I had to look at the About page just to be sure I was right.

Is it me, or does this look a little bit like Cameron Moll's design comp for the National Gazette?

@Tim: Perhaps (more than) a little, but if you're going for a print-newspaper style layout there are always going to be similarities.

Maybe the grid, but that's about it. I would say they did their homework, and looked at sites that worked, and got inspiration from that.

I see nothing wrong here.

my only complaint is they made it 800 wide... seems like a rookie mistake, even if your screen is 800 x 600 your horizontal real estate is typically 777px or less... gotta think of the scrollbars.... other than that its fantastic.

I like the website. It looks very plain and about the similarity with that particular site: you can find a copy of almost every website.

It's you.

I like it but Tim is right. It's very close.

I like the colors and type. At first glance it felt very similar to the redesigned NYTimes.com and NY Mag (http://www.newyorkmetro.com/). Does anybody else feel the same way?

Well of course it does. There are only so many ways to structure an online newspaper...
