I was looking at http://www.PunBB.org , and I was wondering if any of you have created minimalist sites like that. It's so hard to make them. We always tend to add another image, make something round, add some glossy effect, which results in a non-minimalist site. How do you prepare yourself mentally to avoid this?

They are so easy to read. I wonder why news sites are not like that. Take, for example, cnn.com. The story is probably 100px wide. It's got a huge menu just as big on the left, menu above and bellow and huge banners all over the place. That's why I avoid it. It's impossible to read. Many sites are like that. It's pathetic.

Creating minimalist sites in my opinion means learning how to use "spacing" between elements on the page, and of course minimal use of imagery or graphics.

    How do you prepare yourself?

I'm not sure there's an answer to that, being that "design" is usually an organic process.

A good way to learn is by disciplining yourself... for example, try to create a complete site with just text and 1 image (logo).

That particular example you gave us is not a good one.... To me that's a standard 2 column blog type design... when i look at it I don't think "minimalist".

A minimalist site will use a lot of white or "space" and white-spacing.

    here are some good examples:

    I like this one a lot - http://dellostritto.squarespace.com (I didn't make it)

I think it's just about having that one first though on what should stand out, as that PunBB to me seems to be boring not minimalistic. There needs to be something small but cachy like a good - simple header.

I agree that the site in question is not minimalist in nature. It's rather cookie cutter, and there isn't as much white-space as I was expecting from something described as minimalist.

I went for minimalism with the redesign of my personal site.

It can certainly be tough to fight the urge to add more.

Ok, cookie-cutter sites seem to be XHTML + CSS, with maybe a banner, no flash, no ads, no billion images. I see them as minimalist.

How are we defining "minimalist"? Is that different than a "clean style"? I recently redesigned my website as well and tried to keep to one of these 'buzz words'. Its a portfolio site, so graphics exisit, but overall layout is simple and clean but fresh and artistic (or at least that is what I tried to do).

nifkin -- to my question. How are you defining minimalist, that seems to be the discussion now. I tried to keep mine simple, clean and without extra bulk. Can a site be minimalist and have color and images?

Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features.

The term "minimalist" can also refer to anything which is spare, stripped to its essentials, or providing only the outline of structure, independent of the particular art movement, and "minimalism" the tendency to reduce to fundamentals.

i'm also a minimalist, but a friend told me if i was going to use my site as a portfolio, then i should do something more "eye-catching". what do you think? it's sort of a dilemma don't you think so?

honestly, i really..really like all the designs of all those sites. but if i look at it from a more general p.o.v. people would be more attracted to flashy flash sites.

my guts told me to stick to all the glory and advantages of css design. but sometime i get very amazed by sites like www.2advanced.com. who could still provide a complete user experience even with a full flash site.

    OOT:
hhehe...while i was browsing through all these sites i couldn't help myself but to steal some cool stuff.

uummm....mr. adjustafresh....do you mind if i bring home some of your cool js scripts? i really like those show-hide DOM tricks on your site...

That's like a gospel singer going to a records company. They tell her to get into a bikini and sing I'm a Slave for you. If you are a minimalist, stay true to your belives.

In my point of view a person that can think both minimalist and in the same time extreme-flashy and heavy effects (like 2advanced) is someone that has yet to be born. Doesn't webdesign have simmilarities with art? I believe that. Try imagining Picasso painting something simmilar to DaVinci. Hard to imagine, right?

My opinion is that in time you develop a style of your own that has more or less influence out of the two previously specified. Also I consider it quite daunting to be a minimalist lover and then being forced to adopt something that is not in one's design nature.

Evolution is the very basic of human society but I consider if you think of yourself adequate to minimalism you should keep to your style.

I don't think it has any relevance, but I also tried to replicate the 2advanced style and I found it to be extremly complicated. I don't think I poses the necessary design view those people have and so I respect them even more.

I can't help but create minimalist sites and recently simplified my website. I just find it easier to keep it simple... I would love to be able to create something like the majority of designs on here!

Sometimes I start off by creating something complicated, decide I don't like it, and then remove bits to simplify it.

did this site a year or so ago, it was my first attempt at xhtml/CSS, and the client has been messing about with the content, so I'm not sure if it still validates.
In any case, I wanted to know if this qualifies as minimalist. I tried to keep it simple in the markup, though I ended up with a few more divs than I'd use these days. Visually, I don't think that much busier than some other sites on this thread, though not as spread out spatially ... so anyhow, what do you guys think? Minimalist, or not Minimalist?

LOL ... maybe someone should make a rating site "am I minimalist or not"?

I believe minimalism has more to do with how to use typography effectively without relying on the functuality of other graphical elements too much. Minimalism is often an excuse for the lack of a good idea or simply skills. I don't want to insult anyone but it has alot to do with understanding html, css, typography etc.
As for the site you posted ahicox, I wouldn't call it minimalist since graphics are a major element of how this site works, also typography isn't used much.
Of course there is always a certain extend to which the definition of minimalism can be freely interpretated if there is a valid definition at all. Minimalism, maximalism, whatever you call something, it just matters that it satisfies your personal taste. You can't shove creativity into categories too much.
Gah gone a bit off topic, sorry.
